Achievements Highlighted in Newly Released Annual Report
Founded as the DC Marketing Center, the Washington, DC Economic Partnership (WDCEP) has helped to transform the District through its strategic branding and marketing efforts and quality business and retail development programming for more than seven years. The WDCEP not only tells the story of Washington's resurgence, but also actively brands the District as a premier city to take care of business. The newly released 2007/8 Annual Report highlights the accomplishments and achievements of the WDCEP over the last two years, demonstrating its impact on neighborhoods, communities, business owners and partner organizations throughout DC. Doing Business in DC Guide Book Asian Editions Released for the First Time During Chinese New Year
On January 28th, the Washington, DC Economic Partnership will release the highly anticipated Asian editions of the Doing Business in DC Guide Book. The free step-by-step manual, distributed to local universities, business resources providers, and foreign embassies, has been translated into Mandarin, Korean and Vietnamese. Previously published in English and Spanish, this year marks the first time that the publication has expanded to address the Asian community, demonstrating the District's commitment to inclusivity. | WDCEP Able to Expand its Outreach to Small Businesses Thanks to NIF Grant |
A grant from the Neighborhood Investment Fund has allowed WDCEP to expand its sought after Doing Business in Washington, DC guide to include Mandarin, Korean, and Vietnamese editions. The grant is an annual, non-lapsing fund to finance economic development and neighborhood revitalization in 12 targeted areas of the District. Target areas include: Columbia Heights, Shaw, Logan Circle, Brightwood and Upper Georgia Avenue, Bloomingdale and Eckington, Brookland and Edgewood, Deanwood, Anacostia, Congress Heights, Bellevue and Washington Highlands. WDCEP will host workshops about doing business in the District in these communities in early 2009. |
| 2009 Mayor's Environmental Excellence Awards |
| The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) is pleased to announce the first annual 2009 Mayor's Environmental Excellence Awards program. This program will publicly recognize outstanding environmental stewardship, practices, and implementation in the District of Columbia. The award winning entries will serve as case studies in their category. All businesses are invited to apply and there is no charge to apply. Winners of the awards will be recognized at an event during Earth Week April 2009 sponsored by the Government of the District of Columbia. | Interested in receiving a green roof subsidy? Building owners have until January 15 to apply for a grant through the District Department of the Environment (DDOE) and DC Greenworks, a non-profit social enterprise. The subsidy will fund $3 per square foot of the green roof for each qualified project, with a cap of $12,000 per property. Eligible buildings within DC's Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Zone can receive a grant through DDOE's Watershed Protection Division's Pilot Green Roof Subsidy Program, which began in July 2007 and is now in its fourth and final stage. | Mayor's 2009 Summer Youth Employment Program |
| The Mayor's 2009 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) will place District youth in a variety of employment opportunities in the District. Those opportunities span several broad categories, which include "Green Summer", "Summer School / Enrichment", Federal Agencies, The Department of Parks and Recreation's Summer Programs, and Private Sector employment. The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development ("ODMPED") will be spearheading the 2009 Private Sector phase of SYEP. READ MORE... |
| District of Columbia Basic Business License |
| Beginning January 1, 2009, the District of Columbia will begin requiring all businesses that pay business taxes to have a valid District of Columbia Basic Business License (BBL). Under the Business Licensing Processing Adjustment Act of 2008 passed by the DC Council, an estimated 12,000 previously unlicensed businesses will be required to obtain a General Business License. Approximately 6,600 people attended ICSC's second largest conference in December in New York City. Keith Sellars, Vice President of Retail & Real Estate Development at WDCEP attended the conference on behalf the District. Mr. Sellars noted that "Although it was attended by roughly 2000 people less this year than in the past, there was still a lot of energy and it was a great year to continue building strategic relationships and meet with important partners.
