As illustrated in the summaries below, the Washington, DC Economic Partnership is structured around five major work programs to accomplish our mission statement: Marketing & Communications, Business Development, Retail Development, Research & Information and Special Events.


Marketing & Communications

Goal
To reposition the District's image through marketing and PR campaigns that reach local, regional, national and international markets. This includes the creation of a year-round marketing campaign and consistent system of outreach materials that "sell" the District as a world-class business environment.

Initiatives

  • Publications such as DC by the Numbers and Starting Your Business in DC

  • Communication strategies that disseminate information to our partners, community stakeholders, business prospects and the development community

  • State-of-the-art website development for national and international outreach

  • Production of marketing materials that promote DC and its opportunities

  • Production of summary sheets on the District's core economies

  • Production of profile/summary sheets on the District's neighborhoods and commercial corridors

  • A PR campaign of press releases on "good news" stories, events and trends

  • Story placements in regional and national publications and the local print media

  • Publishing of the Washington, DC Economic Partnership's quarterly newsletter – Capital Columns

  • Production and placement of ads on the District’s economic development opportunities

  • Assistance in marketing major DC Government development initiatives

  • Branding the Washington, DC Economic Partnership as a community resource and first point of contact in economic development initiatives


Business Development

Goal
To promote the business friendly environment of the District and facilitate business development, attraction, expansion, and retention in our core economies.

Initiatives

  • Small and minority business development in the District’s neighborhoods

  • Small business assistance and business start-up help

  • Tenant retention in the office market including creation of a rapid response task force to respond to office relocation threats

  • Office attraction and relocation assistance to the District

  • Outreach visits with District companies and businesses – DC Business Connections

  • Marketing of business incentives and resources to brokers, developers and prospects

  • Inventory of leases, buildings, opportunity sites, etc.

  • Partnerships with brokers and developers

  • Policy analysis and recommendations on business impediments, incentives, taxes, regulatory processes, etc.

  • Promoting the District's unique business advantages through publications, trade shows, the print media and educational seminars


Retail Development

Goal
To promote the District's retail opportunities and attract retailers to locate in DC's downtown commercial districts and neighborhood commercial corridors.

Initiatives

  • Retail attraction efforts that encourage retailers to locate in the District, especially the neighborhood commercial corridors

  • Marketing retail opportunities to retailers and commercial developers

  • Coordinating the District's retail initiative and opportunities at ICSC conventions in New York, Washington, and Las Vegas

  • Maintaining an inventory of retail opportunity spaces and sites

  • Partnerships with retail brokers and developers

  • Research into the retail potential of the District

  • Developing marketing materials to support retail attraction

  • Marketing DC Government and NCRC controlled sites for retail development

  • Providing support to the 12 DC Main Streets programs

  • Creating a District wide retail attraction strategy and framework for action

  • Coordinating visits to and site tours of the District and its retail opportunities by retailers, commercial developers and brokers

  • Coordinating quarterly visits to the District by retail clusters


Research & Information

Goal
To serve as a "one stop shop" and first point of contact for information and data related to the District’s economy and development opportunities.

Initiatives

  • Research into the District's core economies and market segments

  • Tracking District development and employment trends

  • Creation and maintenance of District development projects database

  • Database of DC development opportunities – leases, buildings, opportunity sites and vision plans

  • Renovation and maintenance of the Washington, DC Economic Partnership's website

  • Production of maps and supporting demographic documentation

  • Tracking of District building permit data

  • Publication of development trends and permit data

  • Coordination of a DC research consortium that involves other District organizations in research initiatives

  • Additional neighborhood research using the Social Compact methodology


Special Events

Goal
To use special events in promoting the District's incentives, development dynamic, specific projects and programs and development visions while branding the Washington, DC Economic Partnership as a community resource. These events also serve as information outreach programs to the community and opportunities for corporate sponsorships and partnerships.

  • Briefings with the District Council

  • Washington, DC Economic Partnership Annual Meeting and DC Development Showcase

  • Quarterly Business Initiatives Breakfasts

  • Press conferences

  • ICSC conventions

  • Quarterly visits to the District by retail cluster groups

  • Other trade shows and marketing/exhibit opportunities

  • Educational workshops and seminars
  • Economic summits that provide insight into the District's economy and market segments
